A big question you may be asking at this point is:
How do the top SEO experts research keywords?
Here’s the thing, they all do it slightly differently. There really is no perfect way to find good keywords. The methods I have presented so far are a good place for most beginners with a limited budget to start from. If you have a bigger budget you can factor in ROI (Return On Investment).
Many experts will recommend that before choosing keywords for your site you test out the ROI of a bunch of keywords. The keywords that have the highest conversion rates (the most people who buy your product) would then be the ones you would want to optimize your site for. A good rule of thumb when doing this is to find keywords that convert well AND get a lot of traffic.
The bottom line is that you want to choose keywords that will maximize your profits.
Let me give you an example. Let’s say you test out a new site by putting up a Google Ad for “blue xyz widget”. From that ad you get 100 visitors in a week and 50 of those visitors buy your product. This gives you a phenomenal coversion rate of “%50″. It would seem like you would want to get people to your site for that keyword and that is true.
Now let’s say you run another ad, this time for “red xyz widget”. In this case you get 10000 visitors to your site, but only a one percent conversion rate (1 percent buy your product). So 100 people buy your product using that keyword.
Which keyword is better to target?
Well, obviously the one that gets more sales (red xyz widget), right?
Yes and no.
Yes if it is less competive, but if it is highly competitve and it will take a long time to rank high for that term, you may want to target the easier “blue xyz widget” term. I really don’t think beginners need to focus too much on this, but it is good to keep in mind as another factor for choosing your keywords.
