There are several questions I have not answered yet regarding choosing keywords for your site. I plan on asnwering them in my next post(s). But first, I wanted to take a quick break to let you know what I think is the most important thing to keep in mind when promoting your website. I talk about this some in my book, but I want to make this clear before we go any farther.

The Most Important Key to Increase Your Website Traffic and to Making Money Online is:

You need to make your website into the best, most authoritative site in your niche.

If you go back to the step of choosing a niche and you feel like you can’t possibly be a top authority on the niche topic you chose, then your site will never deserve to be one of the top ten sites in your niche. If this is the case then you might want to reconsider your niche.

I am not saying this to scare you off. In fact, I want to motivate you. If you LOVE a particular topic and you love to write about it, then you CAN have one of the top/most authoritative sites in that niche.

Ultimately, it is not going to be about beating the latest Search Engine algorithm. It is going to be about creating the best (or one of the best) websites in that niche. If people like your website, they will return to it, they will tell other people about it, they will link to it. If they don’t like your site, they won’t be coming back.

So what you need to do is take a good look at the niches that you are interested in. Take an objective look at the top sites that come up in the Search Engines for the niche that you have chosen, and ask yourself questions like:

“What can I do to be better than them?”

“How can I differentiate my site, so people will want to visit my site and not theirs?”

“What makes them so good?”

Remember you are not competing with the Search Engines. You are competing with other websites. Sure, you don’t have to compete with other websites. You can create a new untapped niche. Many people do this and it certainly will make it easier to succeed (if people are interested in the niche). However, to start you should think of ways to do things better than what is already being done. Focus on making your new website the best in the business. That is the key ingredient to creating a website that will get tons of traffic.

As always, there are exceptions to this rule. But your long term goal should be to create the best website in your niche. The traffic will follow! Especially when combined with traditional Internet promotion techniques.
