Website Promotion Glossary
I created this glossary so that
if you find any unfamiliar terms on
the
website promotion book site
you won't have to surf elsewhere to find the definition.
If you run into other terms on this website that you are not familiar
with, then please let me know and I will add it to this Glossary.
Backlinks
Backlinks are links to a page on your website from
web pages that are included in a search engine's index.
Backlinks include both links from your website and
from other websites.
Inbound Links
A link from a website outside of your website.
Unlike backlinks inbound links
does not include links from your own website.
Off-page Optimization
Search engines take into account inbound links
to a website as a factor in search engine results.
Getting inbound links to your website is known as
off-page optimization.
On-page Optimization
The process of designing
a web page in a manner that
will help it rank higher in search engine results.
Outbound Links
Links to websites outside of your website. This does
not include links to other pages on your website.
*Page Rank
*Google Page Rank is a value given by the Google Search Engine to a web page that helps Google determine how important the web page is. Page Rank is based on the number and quality of backlinks to a website. For more information read about

Search Engine Index
A search engine index is the database that contains
a copy of all the web pages the search engine
has found while crawling the web. Search engines use
this index for returning relevant search results.
Search Engine Optmization (SEO)
The process of designing a website or web page
in a manner that causes it to appear at or near the top
of search engine search results for certain keywords.
This process consists of two things:
- On-page Optimization
- Off-Page Otimization
Reciprocal Links
Links between two websites,
usually created by an agreement by the
website owners to exchange links.
